Stop Summer Slide!
At our Spring Book Distribution Events, every student at participating elemenatry schools is invited to select 12 brand-new, free books to take home and keep, all in an effort to stop the learning loss (“summer slide”) that occurs over the summer months. 12 books means one for each week of summer break!

Why?
Research demonstrates that children in homes with more extensive home libraries read more, have higher-level reading skills, and attain more years of education overall than those with access to fewer books.

Our program is based on the findings of a study by Dr. Richard Allington who found that when given the autonomous choice to select from books they’re interested in, students are more likely to read those books and develop a foundational love of reading and learning.
Results
Books for Keeps’ 2018 program evaluation found that students participating in the program were not only stopping the summer slide, they were reversing it and gaining 10-20% more levels of reading than their peers not in the program.

Since 2009, we have distributed nearly 1 million books to elementary school students across Northeast Georgia.
